E-waste is becoming an all too familiar term in most communities as millions of televisions, computers, and mobile phones are discarded in Australia each year.
To reduce and minimize the impact of landfill the Federal Government introduced the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme (NTCRS) in 2011.
Each year 40,000 tonnes of computers, tablets, televisions, printers, scanners, photocopiers, keyboards are recycled through the system. E-waste or electronic waste is growing three times faster than any other type of waste in Australia.
There are more than 1800 collection points across the country where householders and small businesses can drop off their unwanted televisions, computers and accessories for free.
These items are then collected and dismantled. Some recyclers dismantle this E-waste by manual labour, separating out the various metals that others use in a fully automated shred and separation process. Circuit Boards, Batteries and all the various metals are recycled and are in high demand in many countries for recycling.
What more can we do?
All of us have a responsibility to ensure that despite our thirst for new technologies that we are mindful of the potential harmful impact E-waste can have on our environment and the legacy we leave for future generations.
Business can also look at their recycling programs, with computer equipment, phones, batteries, fluorescent tubes etc, and develop an overall plan that embraces ways in which they can improve their return from their E-waste as well as being friendly to the environment.
